VAUCELLES (F3), FRA by Le Havre ex Vaunoise (Teofilo)

Prix de Chaillot (Unraced 3yo Fillies, 2,000m/10f), May 31, Deauville (instead of ParisLongchamp)

Owner: Gérard Augustin-Normand

Trainer: Pascal Bary

Breeder: Franklin Finance

Rider: Christophe Soumillon

The five Prix de Chaillot fillies took 2'' less than the colts of the Prix Juigné to ride the 10 furlongs.

Favourite Vaucelles (Le Havre) started well and was happy to let Alikova (Galileo)take the lead. She made her move out of the bend and took some time to prevail but finally took two lengths in the last 100 yards while the 3rd-placed Fraoula (Le Havre) finished 9 lengths down the field.

Vaucelles is the 2nd foal out of Vaunoise (Teofilo), a winner of 4 races and the dam of the unraced Campagnolles (Le Havre), sold €7,000 at the Arqana breeding sales in December.

A Le Havre 2yo colt is in training with Jérôme Reynier while a Caravaggio filly was born in 2019.

Main entries: Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary (Gr1), Prix de Diane Longines (Gr1).

WILL POWER (C3), GER by Ruler of the World ex Welcome (Monsun)

Prix Juigné (Unraced 3yo Colts & Geldings, 2,000m/10f), May 31, Deauville (instead of ParisLongchamp)

Owner: Corinna von Ullmann

Trainer: Francis-Henri Graffard

Breeder: Stall Ullmann

Rider: Pierre-Charles Boudot

Favourite Calculating (Camelot) led from the start this six beginners race. He tried to run away in the final straight but to no avail, as Rushdy (Teofilo) hooked him in the inside while Will Power (Ruler of the World) came by his left side. The latter finally took over and won by a neck, beating Remorse (Dubawi), who finished well and left the favourite half a length behind him at the wire.

Will Power's dam Welcome (Monsun) was unraced but she has been trained in Germany. She's a sister to the German Oaks (Gr1) winner Well Timed (Holy Roman Emperor). She also foaled a 2yo Adlerflug filly in training with Markus Klug.

AXDAVALI (C2), FRA by Goken ex Key Success (Kodiac)

Prix du Berceau (Maiden 2yos, 1,000m/5f), May 31, Deauville (instead of Chantilly)

Owners: Alain Jathière, Camille Vitse & Yann Barberot

Trainer: Yann Barberot

Breeders: Camille Vitse, Yann Barberot & Nicolas Madamet

Rider: Théo Bachelot

Not much suspense here since Axdavali (Goken) immediately took the lead and went away to win by seven lengths… He started with a second place in the Prix d'Orgemont won on May 13 at Chantilly by Giulio Cesare, the first two already leaving the field at six and a half lengths that day (read below). Alain Jathière then became the co-owner of Axdavali.

Axdavali is the first foal out of Key Success (Kodiac), who left racing without a win even though she ran four claimers for trainer Yann Barberot, who is one of the Axdavali's owners and breeders in addition to being his trainer. The mare gave birth to a Birchwood colt last year.

OTTAVIO (C3), GB by Nathaniel ex Our Queen of Kings (Arazi)

Prix Youth (3yo Maiden Colts & Geldings, 2,400m / 12f), May 30, Dieppe (instead of Saint-Cloud)

Owners: Alexandre Pereira & Newsells Park Stud

Trainer: Henri-Alex Pantall

Breeder: Newsells Park Stud

Rider: Julien Guillochon

Second for his debut in October at Angers over one mile, beaten soon after over 1m1/4, then for his comeback in February over Deauville's all-weather track, Ottavio (Nathaniel) was facing only four opponents here, thirteen days after an 8th place at La Teste over 9.5 furlongs. However, he proved to be the best this time over a mile and a half as he came in midfield to beat Darkot (Wootton Bassett), who had just taken over the runaway favourite Reventador (Zoffany).

The winner took three parts of a length to Darkot, while Dubrovskhy (Intello) finished well in 3rd, only half a length behind.

Ottavio was unsold at £40,000 at Tattersalls. he's out of the unraced mare Our Queen of Kings (Arazi), dam of Spinning Queen (Spinning World), a Sun Chariot Stakes (Gr1) winner, but also of Our Dream Queen (Oasis Dream), dam of Omméel (Le Havre), a maiden winner at Clairefontaine only two days before (read below).

CABIYA (F3), FRA by Lawman ex Caminiya, by Sinndar)

Prix Gazala (3yo Maiden Fillies, 2,400m / 12f), May 30, Dieppe (instead of Saint-Cloud)

Owner: S. A. Aga Khan

Trainer: Mikel Delzangles

Breeder: Haras de S. A. Aga Khan

Rider: Christophe Soumillon

Supplemented to run, also entered in the hot beginners' race Prix de Chaillot the next day, Cabiya (Lawman) was facing 7 fillies on this long trip. Stéphane Pasquier led at a slow pave with another beginner, Assigned (Camelot), tried to make the difference early in the straight and took a few lengths two out but he couldn't quite trick Cabiya, who had travelled in 4th and managed to catch them up to score easily by more than three lengths in a few strides. Assigned stayed on in second, two lengths ahead of Gladys Senora (Anodin), who ran well for her third attempt.

Caminiya (Sinndar), the winner’s dam, ran for the first time in September at 3 and didn’t manage to win in three races that Autumn. Caboya is her second foal after an Azamour filly who did not run. The mare was sold for € 21,000 at Arqana breeding sales in 2018, in foal to Zarak. She was sold again a year later at Goffs, Ireland, in foal to Footstepsinthesand, but did not find a buyer this time. Her second dam Clodora (Linamix) won the Prix de l'Opéra (Gr1) before giving birth to Clodovil (Danehill), winner of a Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2,000 Guineas, Gr1).

BENGAL BAY (G3), GB by Cable Bay ex Basque Beauty (Nayef)

Prix du Marché aux Fleurs (Maiden 3yos, 1,400m/7f), May 28, Clairefontaine (instead of ParisLongchamp)

Owner: Fiona Jean Carmichael

Trainer: Fabrice Chappet

Breeder: Rachel de Coventry

Rider: Mickaël Barzalona

Fifth for his debut at Ascot in September for trainer William Haggas, Bengal Bay (Cable Bay) travelled in second outside Baileys Blues (Supplicant) and went forward early on along with Kloster (Style Vendôme), who had followed along the rail. The two rivals fought all the way to the post and Bengal Bay finally prevailed by a neck, but handsomely, while Vintern (Frankel) finished well a further ¾ of a length down, narrowly beating Cap Skirring (French Fifteen) and Persia (Siyouni) who came from the rear.

Bengal Bay was unsold at £25,000 at Tattersalls. His dam Basque Beauty (Nayef), the winner of one race, gave another Cable Bay colt in 2018.

SHARIQ (G3), FRA by Dabirsim ex Twilight Tear (Rock of Gibraltar)

Prix de l’Allée des Cygnes (Maiden 3yos, 1,800m/9f) , May 28, Clairefontaine (instead of ParisLongchamp)

Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum

Trainer: François Rohaut

Breeder: Haras de Grandcamp

Rider: Christophe Soumillon

Once again one of the very few geldings in the race won, as Shariq (Dabirsim) was the only of his sex facing six fillies here. Bought for £240,000 at Tattersalls, he's a full brother to Cœur de Beauté (Dabirsim), a Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas-Gr1) second.

Shariq had started at 2 by a 9th place at Toulouse over the mile. he went here again for his comeback this year, finishing a close second with blinkers on, and then fourth on May 11 without them. This time, he was wearing cheekpieces and finally dominated Ultramarine (Siyouni) after shadowing her all the way.

He won by ¾ of a length, rather cosily, even though Christophe Soumillon had to steer him all the way to the post. Best Step (Sidestep) finished well in third.

Shariq's full sister is born in 2019.

OMMÉEL (G3), FRA by Le Havre ex Our Dream Queen (Oasis Dream)

Prix du Pont du Roi (Maiden 3yos, 2,200m/11f), May 28, Clairefontaine (Instead of Chantilly)

Owner: Gérard Augustin-Normand

Trainer: Anastasia Wattel

Breeder: Franklin Finance

Rider: Théo Bachelot

Good third for his debut on the Deauville all-weather track in February, Omméel (Le Havre) won quite pleasantly this time. Held in the sixth position behind the favourite Whaze (New Approach) who, like him, went forward going off the bend outside the leading horses. Ommeel and Whaze fought all the way, the former finally taking half a length. The beginner Jazzmen (Manduro) led all the way and fought for a long time but finally had to settle for fourth place, a neck behind Zealandia (Sea the Moon), also noted on the front line since the start.

Omméel’s dam, Our Dream Queen (Oasis Dream), didn’t run but she foaled six winners in France. She was sold for € 17,000 in foal to Rajsaman at the Arqana Mixed sales in December 2018 and was exported to Qatar.

PERHAPS (F3), FRA by Lope de Vega ex Reprint (Nayef)

Prix de la Prairie (3yo Maiden Fillies, 1,600m1m), May 27, Vichy

Owner: Al Shaqab Racing

Trainer: Francis-Henri Graffard

Breeder: Serge Boucheron

Rider: Pierre-Charles Boudot

VASCO DE GAMA (C3), FRA by Dansili ex Some Spirit (Invincible Spirit)

Prix du Bois Renard (3yo Maiden Colts & Geldings, 1 600m), May 27, Vichy

Owner: Sheikh Mohammed Obaid al Maktoum

Trainer: Henri-François Devin

Breeders: Écurie des Monceaux, Mayfair Speculators & G.B. Partnership

Rider: Mickaël Barzalona

After travelling by the leader Katafonic (Iffraaj), Vasco da Gama (Dansili) took the upper hand one out then held the beginner Ernan Cortes (Olympic Glory), second at ¾ of a length.

Like Perhaps in the female version of this maiden race, Vasco da Gama had run once fifteen days earlier, running well to finish sixth to Hurricane Cloud.

The winner was purchased for € 300,000 at Arqana sales by Stephen Hillen. A year later in 2019, his Dark Angel brother was sold for € 58,000 to trainer Frédéric Rossi. It is a very beautiful family since the dam, a sister of the Listed winner One Spirit (Invincible Spirit), who notably defeated Gordon Lord Byron, is placed in a Group race over 7 1/2 furlongs… It is also the family of a few champions who became famed sires such as Diktat, Cape Cross and Iffraaj, let alone the champion juvenile and mare Park Appeal.

CALYPSO ROSE (F3), IRE by Invincible Spirit ex Calypso Beat (Speightstown)

Prix des Côtes d’Orléans (3yo Maiden Fillies, 1,000m/5f), May 27, Vichy (instead of Chantilly)

Owners: Rebecca Hillen & Pamela Cockerill

Trainer: Henri-François Devin

Breeders: Écurie des Monceaux, R. S. Cockerill & Framont Ltd

Rider: Aude Duporte

Three times second in five outings, including one this year in February for her return, Calypso Rose (Invincible Spirit) was ridden for the first time by apprentice Aude Duporte, which earned her an 8lbs allowance. fast ahead, she was able to keep a head over Gallya (Power).

Gallya was beaten by a neck, a length and a half ahead of the beginner Ascot Jungle (Bungle Inthejungle), who finished well from the rear, like the fifth Lead Edge (Into Mischief). Always noted behind the leaders, Anfrati (Wootton Bassett) stayed on in third.

Calypso Rose was purchased for € 190,000 at Arqana sales by Stephen Hillen. A year later, her Dark Angel brother made € 120,000 at the October sales in Deauville and he's now in training with André Fabre for owner Prince Faisal bin Khaled. It is the first foal out of Calypso Beat (Speightstown), who won at the Listed level in England at 2 and was Group-placed soon afterwards.

EXCALIBUR (C3), FRA by Sommerabend ex Exeter (Kabool)

Prix de Brichebay (3yo Maiden Colts & Geldings, 1,000m/5f), May 27, Vichy

Owners: Isabelle Corbani, Écurie Pandora Racing & Ahmed Mouknass

Trainers: Maurice Delcher-Sanchez

Breeder: Jedburgh Stud

Rider: Tony Piccone

It was a 9th attempt for Excalibur (Sommerabend) and a first on such a short distance after making his second comeback of the year by finishing third over 7 furlongs only eleven days earlier in Strasbourg. This time, in a lot reduced to five starters after Berneuil (Lope de Vega) was withdrawn after he got upset in the starting stalls, Excalibur followed the first two from the start. He joined them and came by Matello (Intello) and the beginner Wild Majesty (Kodiac), whom he finally beat by a neck while Matello stayed on in third place at two and a half lengths.

Excalibur was sold for € 20,000 to bloodstock agent Marc-Antoine Berghgracht at the Osarus yearling sales in 2018, where he was consigned by his breeder Jedburgh Stud and Haras d'Ellon. His second dam is also that of the good Gorella (Grape Tree Road), a Group 1 winner in the USA and Group 2 in France, where she also placed herself at the best level several times.

Excalibur's dam Exeter (Kabool), who did not run, has now given five winners, and most recently a daughter of Pomellato born in 2018 and a son of The Gray Gatsby last year.

Fourth for her debut last year on very heavy ground at Deauville, Bonne Idée (Frankel) completely dominated this lot, beating the field by over 6 lengths after showing the way from the start. Back from the rear, Les Loges (Le Havre) finished well in 2nd, just edging Zahony (Lawman), who fought all the way.

Bonne Idée is out of Mirror Lake (Dubai Destination), a Listed-winner and a Group 3-placed over 10 furlongs in England, also dam of Imaging (Oasis Dream), a Groupe 3 in Naas in Ireland.

Owners: Wertheimer&Frère

Trainer: Freddy Head

Breeders: Wertheimer&Frère

Rider: Maxime Guyon

Nice overall impression at the end of a final sprint that settled the case in the last hundred yards, when Suffrage (Mastercraftsman) took over the duelling frontrunner Arrogante (Planter) and first time starter Trezy Boy (Le Havre). He won by a length, beating the other gelding amongst the five runners, Sitoutvabien (Golden Horn), who had looked outpaced but finished well from the rear for his first attempt under the training of Anastasia Wattel after six failures since last July. Suffrage had run once last year and finished sixth.

Suffrage’s dam, Abys (Montjeu), was bought for € 450,000 by the Wertheimer family at the end of her 4-year-old season. She is a full sister to Récital (Montjeu), winner of the Critérium de Saint-Cloud (Gr1), and to Corre Caminos (Montjeu), winner of a Prix Ganay (Gr1). She gave Spiritis (Invincible Spirit), born in 2016 and bought for € 30,000 by bloodstock agent Paul Nataf at the 2019 Arqana breeding sales. She won a handicap this winter in Cagnes-sur-Mer with a 72lbs-mark. After Suffrage, Abys gave Cargo (Le Havre), in training with Yan Durepaire, and a filly by Intello born this year.

Entei (Motivator) kept the 3rd place after following the leading group, a short head ahead of Magic Edouard (Dabirsim).

A further short head behind comes First Sight (Siyouni), always noted near the leaders.
