RISE AND SHINE (f2), FRA by Shalaa ex Cruel Sea (Mizzen Mast)

Prix d’Epreville (Maiden 2-year-old Fillies, 1,900m/9.5f AWT), December 30, 2022, Deauville

Owners: Marco Saviozzi, Davy Bonilla

Trainer: Andreas Schütz

Breeder: Haras des Trois Chapelles

Rider: Clément Lecœuvre

Sixth for her debut in October over Longchamp's 9 furlong-trip, then fifth over the all-weather mile at Chantilly, Rise and Shine (Shalaa) travelled wide without cover here but a foggy, slow-paced race didn't affect her stamina. She eventually prevailed in her fight with her only rival Alcedimzoe (Territories), who had travelled outside the leaders. Only a length separates them in the end while the beginner Kanza (Aerakan) finished 3rd at over 7 lengths …

Rise and Shine was sold for €30,000 at Arqana as a yearling, consigned by Normandie Breeding, to Code 73 Agency (Davy Bonilla). Last November, her Cloth of Stars brother made €15,000, again in Deauville, where he was bought by Mohammed Sultan.

Those are out of the Pretty Polly Stakes (L) second Cruel Sea (Mizzen Mast), whose second dam Daeltown (Dictus) won the Prix Corrida (Gr3) and du Rond-Point (Gr3) before being exported to the USA.

CALAS (g2), FRA by Al Wukair ex Cetova (Holy Roman Emperor)

Prix de Martainville (Maiden 2-year-old colts & geldings, 1,900m/9.5f AWT), December 30, 2022, Deauville

Owner: Buck Racing

Trainer: Pia & Joakim Brandt

Breeder: Buck Racing

Rider: Simon Planque

Calas (Al Wukair) had already made quite an impression on this very track three weeks earlier when 3rd for his debut despite a missed start. He had been entered as early as August and had been gelded since then. Back on the all-weather track with a 10 draw in a 16-strong field under the floodlights, he was the race's favourite. After travelling near the leaders, with Big Rock (Rock of Gibraltar) running ahead, he took on the front runner and finally won by one length. Two lengths further down finished Sir Alexander (Zoffany), himself a good length ahead of a promising Olympic Goal (Olympic Glory), who came from the rear.

Calas is the first foal out of Cetova (Holy Roman Emperor), a Vichy winner out of a full sister to Doctor Dino (Muhtathir), also a sister to the sire Bande (Authorized). Her Dream Ahead brother was withdrawn form the September sale at Deauville. a Dabirsim colt was born in 2022.

MARANADO (g3), FRA by Toronado ex Maracena (Marju)

Prix du Sentier du Littoral (Maiden 3-year-olds, 1,900m/9.5f AWT), December 30, 2022, Deauville

Owners: Jean Uzel, Christophe Lotoux

Trainer: Christophe Lotoux

Breeder: Jean Uzel

Rider: Clément Lecœuvre

Third in a claimer for his first trial over the all-weather, a neck behind the winner, on December 15 on the same course and distance, Maranado (Toronado) had been secured by his connections, who threw in €2,620 above his €22,000 claiming tag to keep him at home. It proved to be worth it as with this first win, the gelding allows the same connection, and mostly his breeder and co-owner Jean Uzel, to pocket €21,379 in prize money and premiums. It was the gelding's seventh attempt. Last out of the gates, held at the rear until the last straight, Maranado was the fastest closer, just catching the front runner Power Papers (Soldier Hollow) on the wire despite the latter's 3lbs claim with female rider Marie Velon up.

Maranado was unsold at Arqana as a yearling in October 2020, at € 15,000, even though his Wootton Bassett sister has been sold to Klaravich Stables a year after for € 110,000, at the same vacation. The filly has been exported to the USA a month later. A Galiway filly was born in 2022.

Maranado's dam Maracena (Marju) is very well bred since this handicap winner with a 64lbs rating at Craon is a sister to Recoletos (Whipper), a dual Gr1 winner. She was claimed after her third outing when 2nd over 1m1/2 at Clairefontaine, for €15,220. She won for the first and only time straight after that and eventually ran again in a claimer for her new connections, but to no avail this time. Maranado is her third winner and his siblings and him earned a combined €122,000 so far in prize money and premiums.

SAUTERNE  (f2), FRA by Kingman ex Salicorne (Aragorn)

Prix du Jardin des Cascades (Unraced 2-year-old fillies, 1,600m/1m AWT), December 23, 2022, Chantilly

Owner: Jean-Pierre Dubois

Trainer: Patrice Cottier

Breeder: Jean-Pierre Dubois

Rider: Tony Piccone

A good third for her debut, on Deauville’s all-weather, after struggling to find a gap, Sauterne (Kingman) started as the favourite and she did it quite brilliantly, even though she was well challenged by Nostra Imperatrice (Holy Roman Emperor ) in the last 300 yards, getting her to to work to the end to win by half a length. Coming from far within the field, Ile Saint Louis (Sioux Nation) finished third at more than three lengths ahead of a promising debutante, Near Amore (Amaron), who finished well on the rail on the same line as Kitten's Paw (Mukhadram).

Sauterne was bought as a yearling in Deauville for €130,000. More recently, her sister Salerno (Charm Spirit), a winner, was sold for € 9,000 in foal to Wooded. Sauterne's second dam, Soignee (Dashing Blade), is the dam of the champion mare Stacelita (Monsun). Sauterne’s Inns of Court yearling brother was bought for €27,000 at the October yearling sales in Deauville.

SOUS LA NEIGE (c2), FRA by Shalaa ex Setsuko (Shamardal)

Prix de l’Ancien Potager (Unraced 2-year-old colts and geldings, 1,600m/1m AWT), December 23, 2022, Chantilly

Owners: SCEA Haras de Saint-Pair, Elisabeth Fabre

Trainer: André Fabre

Breeders: SCEA Haras de Saint-Pair, Écurie Peregrine SAS

Rider: Alexis Pouchin

Second for his debut at the beginning of November over the mile of Saint-Cloud, then on the same distance but over the all-weather at Chantilly, Sous La Neige (Shalaa) has finally passed the test here. The odds-on favourite, he simply got away in the last 300 yards and won easily, by five lengths. Le Rozel (Shalaa) fought hard to take the second place, beating the front runner Blindman (Sea the Moon) by a head.

Sous la Neige did not reach its reserve price as a yearling at Arqana, at €10,000. His unraced dam Setsuko (Shamardal) is a sister of the excellent Soleil Marin (Kendargent). It is a Wertheimer family from which also came Groom Dancer and, more recently, Légèreté and the French Guineas winner Falco. Setsuko also gave an Oasis Dream colt in 2022.

LE TABOU (c2), (GB) by Charm Spirit ex Having a Blast (Exchange Rate)

Prix de l’Hotellerie (Unraced 2-year-old colts and geldings, 1,300m/6.5f AWT), December 20, 2022, Deauville

Owner: Claire Stephenson

Trainer: Georges Doleuze

Breeder: The Having a Blast Bytnership

Rider: Rosario Mangione

Second on this track but over 1,500 meters for his debut after having long held the lead in the final stages, last November, Le Tabou (Charm Spirit) this time took the lead early and he easily held on to it, crossing the post three lengths ahead of the favourite Schwendi (Shalaa), second after waiting in good place.

Le Tabou went twice to the sales. He was first bought as a weanling, then sold for € 17,000 to MAB Agency as a yearling, again in Deauville. Since then, his dam Having a Blast (Exchange Rate) was sold on November 30 for £4,000 at Tattersalls, where Trickledown Stud bought her in foal to Kameko, also sire of her 2022 filly. Le Tabou is her third winner.

Having A Blast went on sale seven times between her first change of hands, as a yearling for $75,000 at Keeneland, and this last listing in a catalogue. Meanwhile, she had cost $180,000 at 2 when John McCormack bought her for the Al Thani family. Trained in France by Mikel Delzangles, she won her maiden at 3 after finishing fourth less than two lengths of the good We Are. Arcadia Élevage, who sold Le Tabou, had bought the mare for €12,000 when in foal to Le Tabou.

WAY TO AMARILLO (f2), FRA by Shalaa ex Peinted Song (Unbridled’s Song)

Prix du Lieu des Champs (Unraced 2-year-old fillies, 1,300m/6.5f AWT), December 20, 2022, Deauville

Owner: Lone Star Investments

Trainer: Archie Watson

Breeder: Lisa Lemière Dubois

Rider: Mickaël Barzalona

Fourth and second on the all-weather at Kempton Park in June, Way to Amarillo (Shalaa) came back a few months later on the Wolverhampton fibresand, where she again took a second place, before crossing the Channel to finally find a fitting maiden.

With the 8 draw, this favourite had to travel outside without cover and if she was ridden early after turning 3-wide, she nevertheless made the difference early while her best rival, Montauk Point (Kingman), who came from the last row to make her way in a particularly congested and hectic field, finished strong in second at less than a length. Also from quite a distance, Lady Roche (Hot Streak) finished third at half a length.

Purchased for €140,000 at Arqana by Alex Elliott, Way to Amarillo is the seventh foal out of Peinted Song (Unbridled's Song), several times Listed-placed and a winner on the Deauville all-weather. She, in turn, gave two Listed-placed foals. Way to Amarillo's third dal is Peinture Bleue (Alydar), the dam, among others, of the great Peintre Célèbre (Nureyev).

Peinted Song also gave a filly by Almanzor born in 2021.

CHICHEN ITZA (f3), GB by Fastnet Rock ex Phaenomena (Galileo)

Prix du Poteau des Brûlis (Maiden 3-year-olds, 3,200m/2m AWT), December 17, 2022, Chantilly

Owner: Écurie des Monceaux

Trainer: Yann Barberot

Breeder: Flaxman Stables

Rider: Mickaël Barzalona

Beaten 5 times in Britain, when trained by Michael Stoute for the Niarchos Family, who bred her, Chichen Itza (Fastnet Rock) was sold for £130,000 at Tattersalls on November 29.

Three weeks later, she finally finds the post in first position over this two-mile bumper over the all-weather which allows her new owners to enhance an already attractive catalogue page: Chichen Itza is a sister to Harajuku (Deep Impact), a Prix Cléopâtre (Gr3) winner exported to the USA, where she placed again in Group company, and to King of Koji (Lord Kanaloa), a Gr2-winner in Japan.

To do so, she came by easily entering the last straight and fought the favourite Bukhara (Isfahan) to the line, finally getting the better of the German raider by a good length, as the third-placed Les Paradis Perdus (Castle du Berlais) juste held on at 7.5 lengths, 10 lengths ahead of the field…

VIVERNUS (c2), FRA by Midshipman ex Aldara (Street Cry)

Prix de Kildare (Unraced 2-years-old colts and geldings, 1,500m AWT), December 16, 2022, Deauville

Owner: Sultan Saeed Mohammed Harib Alfalahi

Trainer: Ingrid Janackova Koplikova

Breeder: Sultan Saeed Mohammed Harib Alfalahi

Rider: Alexis Pouchin

Long held at the rear, Vivernus (Midshipman) came by progressively along the rail and moved decisively in he last straight to challenge and only pip a brave Taybet (Zoffany), who had come in the middle of the track and stayed on well, only beaten a nose. Zelzephyr (Zelzal) also finisged well from far back at almost two lengths, a head ahead of the closing Cueros (Territories) and Murciano (Kingman), always there with the leaders.

Vivernus is the 4th foal out of the US mare Aldara (Street Cry), bought for $8,000 in February 2019, barren, at Fasig-Tipton. None of ther previous foals has ever won, as it seems. The second dam is a sister to Thunder Kitten (Storm Cat), dam of the Ribblesdale Stakes (Gr2) winner Michita (Dynaformer), and of Willing Foe (Dynaformer), a Prix Gladiateur (Gr3) 3rd over two miles.

QUICKSTEP (f2), FRA by Wootton Bassett ex Dance Toupie (Dansili)

Prix de Lexington (Unraced 2-year-old Fillies, 1,500m AWT), December 16, 2022, Deauville

Owner: Godolphin

Trainer: André Fabre

Breeder: Mathieu Daguzan-Garros

Rider: Mickaël Barzalona

The favourite Quickstep (Wootton Bassett) easily prevailed after travelling in third along the rail. Sunlike (De Treville) came from the rear, also inside, at one length while Omicrone (Zelzal) closed in the middle of the rack in 3rd at another length. Quickstep was sold as a weanling by her breeder's Haras des Granges at Arqana for €120,000 to Canirola Bloodstock. She made £350,000 the following year at Tattersalls, when consigned by Haras d'Etreham and purchased by Stroud-Coleman for Godolphin.

Last December, Mathieu Daguzan-Garros also parted with the filly's weanling sister by Persian King, sold at Deauville to Bobby Flay for €65,000. The second dam is Toupie (Intikhab), a French One Thousand Guineas 2nd when trained by François Rohaut exported to Japan at 8 despite being unsold at Deauville at €340,000.

WARM BREEZE (g3), FRA by Havana Gold ex Lakuta (Pivotal)

Prix de Longny-au-Perche (Maiden 3-year-olds, 2,500m AWT), Saturday 10 December, Deauville

Owner: Le Haras de la Gousserie

Trainer: Ludovic Rovisse

Breeder: London Thoroughbred Services

Rider: Hugo Journiac

Favorite for his thirteenth race, the third on an all-weather track, Warm Breeze (Havana Gold) finished seven times second before, and that from his debut, in a March Chantilly claimer, over the all-weather, when claimed for € 37,777 while entered at… €17,000!

Since then, he has taken €81,744 with the premiums and had just competed in three handicaps with a. 83lbs rating, finishing third once, over 1m3f.

This first victory was obtained thanks to a favorable trip. He travelled midfield and got closer outside in the turn behind Ultra Marino (Ultra), who led him into the last straight, where he was able to give his best and overcome a brave Rainbow Warrior (Expected), who was competing for the third time only and finished second at only one neck.

A good finisher by the rail, Douriann (Golden Horn) came from a distance to finish third at one head, clocking the fastest last two furlongs in the race, a length and a half ahead of Need You Tonight (Brametot).

Out of a winning sister to the champion mare Moonlight Cloud (Invincible Spirit), Warm Breeze was sold at the end of last year in Deauville, unraced, by Jérôme Reynier for only €4,000 to Martha Kubicka. A filly by Almanzor was born this year.

AALTO (f2), FRA by Zelzal ex Au Dessus (Siyouni)

Prix du Chantier Naval (Maiden 2-years-olds, 1,500m AWT), Saturday 10 December, Deauville

Owner: Mrs. Robert G. Ehrnrooth

Trainer: Henri-François Devin

Breeder: Breeding Haras de Bourgeauville

Rider: Clément Lecœuvre

Seventh for his debut on the same course 25 days earlier, Aalto (Zelzal) won by a narrow margin coming from the depths of the field in the middle of the track to pass the leading group. However, he narrowly resisted Zalamo (Seahenge), who came from far back in between horses, and the debutante Calas (Al Wukair), who had missed the start and made up lots of ground along Zalamo in the final straight. Margins between the top 3 are a nose and a short head...

Like his own brother last summer, Aalto was withdrawn from the Arqana yearling sales. Their dam Au-Dessus (Siyouni), however, had been unsold at € 75,000 at the same sales by the Haras de Bourgeauville. She never ran. An Intello filly was born in 2022.

HONGUEMARE ( f3), FRA by Le Havre and Hallotière (Hurricane Run)

Prix de Mirande (Maiden 3-years-olds, 1,900m AWT), December 10, Deauville

Owner: Gérard Augustin-Normand

Trainer: Yann Barberot

Breeder: Franklin Finance

Rider: Gregory Benoist

Fifth for her debut in March, then twice second in Saint-Cloud and Longchamp in April and May behind eventually black-typed fillies, Honguemare (Le Havre) had even been entered in the Prix Mélisande (L) but she had not reappeared since.

Favourite despite these six months of absence, she won easily after waiting in midfield. Closing in the middle of the track, she took over about 300 meters from home and led Martial Art (Expected) to the post, the latter eventually taking second place at more than a length, only a head in front of the beginner Rouzic (Lope de Vega), who came inside on the same line as Martial Art.

An own sister to Honguemare, Harcanville (Le Havre), winner of only one race, at Saint-Cloud, was unsold, barren, at € 20,000 by Sumbe at the last Arqana breeding sales. Their dam Hallotière (Hurricane Run), also winner of a race, had so far given 7 foals including 5 of racing age, and Honguemare is her first winner…

DON DIEGO DE VEGA (c2), FRA by Lope de Vega ex Fairly Fair (Sinndar)

Prix de la Gagnerie (Unraced 2-year-old colts and geldings, 1,900m AWT), December 9, Deauville

Owners: Alexandre Foulon, Hubert Guy, Hubert Meraud, Ecurie Vivaldi

Trainer: Stéphane Wattel

Breeders: Haras des Monceaux, Langlais Bloodstock, William McAlpin, Kastro Stud Farm

Rider: Alexis Pouchin

A brother to the Prix d'Harcourt (Gr2) winner Shaman (Shamardal) and the Listed-winner Green Sweet (Smart Strike), the Wertheimer homebred Not Alone (Mastercraftsman) started as the favourite. He travelled behind the leaders and had the good trip but just couldn’t keep up with Don Diego de Vega (Lope De Vega), who enjoyed the best trip along the rail with the leaders while the favourite had progressed in the middle of the track. They were separated by a neck with the 3rd-placed L'Acajou (Frankel), also always seen in the lead, relegated at 3.5 lengths.

Fairly Fair (Sinndar), the winner’s dam, won the Prix Finlande (L) in 2012. This is her second winner. The second dam, Fairly Grey (Linamix), is a full sister to the sire Fair Mix (Sinndar). A Group-placed mare, she also gave Fairly Ransom (Red Ransom), winner of the Del Mar Derby (Fr2) and second in the Hollywood Derby (Gr1), but also Graphite (Shamardal), winner in France of two Group 3 races.

Don Diego de Vega’s sister Fairly Wings (Iffraaj), now 3 years old, recently went to the breeding sales in Deauville where Castillon Bloodstock got her for € 3,500. Don Diego himself had been acquired from Arqana, at the yearling sales in October 2021 where Hubert Guy paid €90,000 to get him.

FRENCH BOB (f2), IRE by Galileo ex Beauty Parlour (Deep Impact)

Prix du Grand Chesnay (Unraced 2-year-old fillies, 1,900m AWT), December 9, Deauville

Propriétaire: White Birch Farm

Trainer: Jean-Claude Rouget

Breeders: White Birch Farm, Michael Tabor, Mme Susan Magnier

Rider: Cristian Demuro

With a sublime pedigree by Galileo and a winner of the French One Thousand Guineas, also second in the Prix de Diane (French Oaks, Gr1), French Bob (Galileo) was the perfect candidate for the favourite role. She was held up in a fast race led up to 300 metres out by White Cliff (Zelzal) and Ketamine Bailly (Pomellato), and then moved from fifth to the lead to score by a neck ahead of Garbo (Reliable Man), who also finished strongly along the rail. Rue de l'Aude (Manduro) took third place at two lengths after a soft trip in midfield.

The winning dam Beauty Parlour (Deep Impact) was bred by the Wildensteins, who sent her own dam, the Listed-winner and Group-placed Bastet (Giant's Causeway), to Japan to be bred to Deep Impact (Sunday Silence). Thus were born Barocci, a Listed-winner who was also placed in several Group races, and then Beauty Parlour. She already gave a Group 1 winner as a broodmare with Blowout (Dansili), winner of the First Lady Stakes (Gr1) at Keeneland in 2021 at the age of 5. Note that she gave birth in 2022 to a foal by Kingman (Invincible Spirit).

Beauty Parlour's very first foal, Being There (Dubawi), was consigned at the Goffs Ireland yearling sales and John Ferguson went up to €1,400,000 to buy him. He only won his maiden. Also in Ireland, the eventual Group 1 winning filly Blowout was sold as a weanling and Whitebrich Farm spent €450,000 on her. Peter Brant's stud farm also acquired the broodmare during the same 2016 sale for €1,600,000. And the interest of the American investor for this family does not stop there since during this year's breeding sales in Tattersalls, he bought for € 250,000 the unraced 3-year-old filly Bouffant (Galileo), a sister to French Bob.

NOCE D'OR (c3), FRA by Al Wukair ex Fedora (Kendor)

Prix de Roiville (Maiden 3-year-olds, 1,500m AWT), December 9, Deauville

Owner: Mrs. Jean-Louis Giral

Trainer: Andreas Schutz

Breeder: Mrs. Jean-Louis Giral

Rider: Clément Lecœuvre

Noce d'Or (Al Wukair) was running his 11th race. A little less far from the race lead than usual, he went from fifth to a length and a half winner in a final dash. He beat the two front runners Fasten Wave (Fastnet Rock) and Chilly Boy (De Treville). The favourite Galord (Galiway) sprinted well and gained four places in the last 300 metres but could not keep up to the first horses home.

Noce d'Or is close to the heart of his owner-breeder, Mrs. Jean-Louis Giral, because he was born the year of her husband's passing and he is out of their broodmare Fedora (Kendor), born in 1998 and dam of the champion sprinter Marchand d'Or (Marchand de Sable), five-time Group 1 winner in France and England. Fedora's offspring of 13 foals includes 8 winners, Marchand d'Or and Gold Step (Sidestep) being the top ones.

Some of her foals went on sale: it can be noted that during the Arqana 2022 breeding sales, Whippa d'Or (Whipper), a 10-year-old broodmare, was bought by Turquoise Bloodstock for €25,000.
