Sunday, 3rd September 2023, Hippodrome ParisLongchamp (Paris) — One of the braves and most consistent fillies of the season, the 3-year-old Sauterne (Kingman) finally clinched her first Group 1 win over a mile in the €450,000 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Gr1). Homebred by Jean-Pierre Dubois, she was racing for the ninth time the year, and she seized her maiden Group 1 race after racking up four podium finishes at the Group level.

Ridden by Tony Piccone, Sauterne broke sharply from gate 1 and allowed the favourite, Big Rock (Rock of Gibraltar), to take the lead as is customary. She moved out smoothly in the final stretch and dominated Big Rock in the last furlong, securing the win by a comfortable length. Big Rock styed on well in second ahead of a group of horses including Facteur Cheval (Ribchester), Erevann (Dubawi), and Belbek (Showcasing).

A winner in her second outing as a 2-year-old in December, Sauterne won twice in the Winter on the all-weather surface at Deauville over 7 furlongs. Thirteenth on her seasonal return in the Prix Imprudence (Gr3) in April, Sauterne then bagged her Listed race, subsequently finishing third in the Emirates Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French One Thousand, Gr1), second in the Sandringham (Gr3), second in the Haras d’Étreham Prix Jean Prat (Gr1), and third in the Prix Rothschild (Gr1).

Sauterne was purchased as a yearling in Deauville for €130,000. More recently, her sister Salerne (Charm Spirit), also a winner, was sold for €9,000 in foal to Wooded. Sauterne's second dam, Soignée (Dashing Blade), is the dam of champion Stacelita (Monsun). Sauterne's brother by Inns of Court was bought for €27,000 at the October 2022 yearling sales and is currently in training with Jean Baudron.

Sauterne herself was unsold at €1.2 million at the Goffs sales in London, just prior to the Royal Ascot meeting.
