Monday, 29th May 2023, ParisLongchamp Racecourse (Paris). – This Prix du Palais-Royal (Gr3) was briskly led by the supplementary entry, Loubeisein (Kheleyf), sided by National Service (Elusive City), whilst Amilcar (Wootton Bassett) and the German raider Danelo (Exceed and Excel) travelled on a second rank. As for the favourite, Egot (Invincible Spirit), he was held at the rear of this field of eight runners, alongside Nicolas Caullery's two representatives, Fort Payne (Rio de la Plata) and King Gold (Anodin).
2 furlongs out, as they had gone down the hill to face the long straight, National Service had taken the lead while on the centre of the course, Fort Payne had moved forward around the pack, with Egot slightly lagging, and King Gold finding a way in between horses. In the final hundred metres, Fort Payne decisively dominated, leaving National Service to just about keep second place, despite King Gold's good final sprint, more than a length ahead of Egot, who hit the post at full speed.
A winner this winter of two all-weather races at Chantilly, over 9 and 7 furlongs, and then fifth in the Prix du Muguet (Gr2) on a very soft turf, which likely didn't suit him, King Payne here claimed his first group race.
Fort Payne is owned by his breeder, the wife of the former trainer Philippe Demercastel, in partnership with Alain Jathière and his current trainer, Nicolas Caullery. His dam, Lady Verde (Meshaheer), was sold for €1,000, in foal to Martinborough, at Deauville early in 2019. Maiden after eleven outings, Lady Verde was exported to Tunisia after the birth of Fort Payne.
His second dam is a sister of the champion Kendor and an aunt of the good performers Hightori and Vatori.
Lundi 29 mai 2023, Hippodrome ParisLongchamp (Paris). – Ce (Gr3) a été mené rondement par le supplémenté Loubeisein (Kheleyf), flanqué de National Service (Elusive City) alors que galopaient Amilcar (Wootton Bassett) et l’allemand Danelo (Exceed and Excel) dans leur sillage. Le favori Egot (Invincible Spirit), pour sa part, galopait à l’arrière-garde de ce peloton de huit concurrents, avec les deux représentant de Nicolas Caullery, Fort Payne (Rio de la Plata) et King Gold (Anodin).
A 400 mètres du but, l’arrivée de ce parcours de 1 400m du toboggan de Longchampp étant donnée au second poteau, National Service avait pris l’initiative tandis qu’en pleine piste, Fort Payne entamait sa progression en contournant le peloton, avec Egot en léger retrait, et King Gold qui trouvait le passage entre de ses autres adversaires. Dans les cent derniers mètres, Fort Payne a dominé nettement, laissant à une longueur National Service garder de justesse la deuxième place malgré la bonne fin de course de King Gold, plus d’une longueur devant Egot, qui progressait encore.
Gagnant cet hiver de deux courses sur PSF à Chantilly, sur 1 800 et 1 400 mètres, cinquième ensuite du prix du Muguet (Gr2) sur un parcours très souple qui ne lui a sans doute pas réussi, King Payne remportait ici sa première course de groupe.
Fort Payne appartient à son éleveur, l’épouse de l’ex-entraîneur Philippe Demercastel, associée à Alain Jathière et à son entraîneur actuel, Nicolas Caullery. Sa mère Lady Verde (Meshaheer) a été vendue 1 000 € pleine de Martinborough à Deauville en début d’année 2019. Maiden après onze sorties, Lady Verde a été exportée en Tunisie après la naissance de Fort Payne.
Sa deuxième mère est une sœur du champion Kendor, et une tante des bons Hightori et Vatori.
