Classe 1 race, but generously rewarded (€137,500 to the winner), the second edition of the Haras de Bouquetot – Criterium of the Arqana October yearling Sale was awarded to Master Brewer (Reliable Man), who proved to be authoritative in the final phase. With a stylish finish, Edinson (Diamod Green) came to snatch 2nd place from La Yaki (Makfi).

Master Brewer, being trained by Michael Bell, had not run since the end of July. He finished fourth in a Listed at Ascot, after having opened his scorecard for his second outing to Newmarket. The horse was sold at the Arqana October yearling sale (Sine qua non condition for entering in this race) for 85,000€. He was presented by Coulonces Sales and was sold to Alex Elliott.

How they ran

  • 1st – Master Brewer : Made the most of his good draw on the inside to travel in 4rth position on the heels of the leader, Ticklish. Pulling out 2 fulrongs from the post, he gained ground with ease before changing legs at 300m and winning a shade cosily.
  • 2nd - Edinson: Broke well, he travelled in fourth position without cover. Wise to mimic the acceleration of the leading pack coming into the home straight, he gave a final push and snatched up second place.
  • 3rd – La Yafki: Among the quickest coming out of the stalls, travelled to sit up with the leaders. Came to challenge the leader at the Pavillion, giving the illusion of a victory. He battled bravely but proved no match for the winner and had to concede second place.
  • 4rth – Famous Wolf: He sat mid-division towards the outside before quickening at the start of the final straight, following the leading pack. His acceleration weakened putting daylight between him and the leaders in the final furlong.
  • 5th - Ticklish: Jumped well, taking the lead and was good competition in the final straight, although had to settle for fifth place.
  • 6th – Pappalino: Travelled at the rear end of the pack, faded badly.
  • 7th – Crackaway: Broke well, settling mid-division but was vanquished in the final furlong.
  • 8th – Houesville: Sat towards the rear, failed to quicken coming home.
  • 9th – Mon Ouragan: Made his run at the rear end of the pack, never any impression.
  • 10th - Glenorchy: travelled in last place, no extra
  • 11th - It’s All a Dream : Sat in mid-division but turned badly in the false straight, going wide. Every chance but was no competition afterwards.

Reactions from connections

Michael Bell (Trainer Master Brewer, 1st)

“He travelled well and wore blinkers which helped him. Last time, he was a bit too fresh. He has improved from his last performance. He is very talented, we have always loved him a lot. He will definitely come back to France for the Owners Premiums next year.”

Richard Chotard (Trainer of Edinson, 2e)

"I thought he had a good chance today. I forgot his races at Borély : I don’t think he likes Marseille. Maybe it’s the distance of 1600m which he doesn’t like at Borély, with the sharp corner. Every time, he has ears flat back. At Vichy, he won the whole race. Today, he was fighting for the win. I don’t know what is next to come. I have always liked this horse. There is a Listed but it’s at Marseille... On the other hand, it is over 2000m, so maybe that will suit him better!”

Eoghan O’Neill (Trainer of La Yakfi, 3e)

“He runs very well. He is a big colt who continues to improve. He will run in a maiden next time, and then I will leave him until next year.”
