The Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe named best race in the world for the 5th time.

Thanks to the partnership with Qatar Equestrian & Racing Club, the international stature of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe has grown stronger with each renewal (every year the event is broadcast live in 60 countries) and the historic race has reinforced its leadership.

On Tuesday, 25 January 2022, Longines and the IFHA (International Federation of Horseracing Authorities), the co-organiser of the Longines World Racing Awards, announced that the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe had once again been named the best race in the world, based on the official rankings. Since the inception of this ceremony in 2015, the Arc has been named the best race in the world five times, notably in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and in 2021.

France Galop and Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club extend their partnership of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe to 2027.

France Galop and the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) have confirmed an extension of their sponsorship agreement of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend that takes place each year around the first Sunday in October. The renewal of this important partnership for French racing covers a period of 5 years, from 2023 to 2027.

In the world of sport, this sponsorship agreement stands out for its extraordinary longevity. Initiated in 2008 for a period of 5 years (2008-2012), in 2010 it was extended for a further twelve years until 2022. This new extension will now run until 2027.

The renewed partnership reinforces the prestige of a weekend (Friday 30 September at Saint-Cloud, Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd October 2022 at ParisLongchamp) that includes no less than 16 Group races (8 Gr1, 3 Gr2, 1 Gr3 and 4 Gr1 dedicated to Purebred Arabian races) and offers total prizemoney of €10,4 million. The two days of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend, together with the Friday meeting at the Saint-Cloud racecourse, thus are the main targets for Europe’s best horses at the back end of the season.

Two iconic races of the weekend will offer record prizemoney: The €5 million Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the €1 million Qatar Arabian World Cup, the world’s most prestigious race for Purebred Arabians.

The ParisLongchamp track: the most challenging 2,400 metres in the world!

The history of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is inextricably linked to the ParisLongchamp track, renowned throughout the world for its difficulty. To win over this 2,400-metre course, horses have to combine speed with stamina, i.e. the ability to run over long distances (over two kilometres). The racetrack, which is meticulously looked after throughout the year, showcases the complete racehorse, capable of managing its energy while producing incredible bursts of speed.

The 2,400-metre course at ParisLongchamp is very technical by nature! When horses leave the stalls, they will accelerate over the first 400 metres to gain a position before meeting their first challenge: a 600-metre rise before the first bend. It is important that horses relax here and don’t expend their energy in this first part of the race. Then the track begins a long descent where horses are tempted to accelerate, and where jockeys have to pace themselves – this is only the halfway point of the race.

Then comes the long false straight, where jockeys manoeuvre for the best possible position from which to launch their attack down the lengthy 533-metre home straight to the finish line!

Statistics by the winner’s nationality

In horseracing, the nationality of the winner is determined by the country where it is trained, regardless of where it was born or the nationality of its owners.

Since the creation of this international event, France tops the winner’s table thanks to 68 victories in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

The last 10 renewals have been won five times by French horses, three times by English horses, and once each by German and Irish horses.
