Bought Saturday evening during the Arqana Arc sale for €490,000, Lily’s Candle (Style Vendome) was quick to reward her new owner, Martin Schwartz by winning the Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr1). The filly, her trainer Fabrice Vermeulen’s first Gr1, travelled in the rear end of the pack and squeezed through on the inside of the home straight. She battled for the win and hit the post a shade cosily of Matematica (Rock of Gibraltar), who was on her second time out. Star Terms (Sea The Stars) came a close third.
Lily’s Candle had just finished fourth at the Prix La Rochette (Gr3), against the colts, after having won the Prix des Jouvenceaux et Jouvencelles (L).
How they ran
1st - Lily’s Candle: Held up at the rear end of the pack and was still well back off the pace at the false home straight, quickened impressively 300m from the post and after a push, won by a nose.
- 2nd– Matematica: Travelled off the bridle, in second last place, came to challenge the leaders 100m from the post but couldn’t hold off Lily Candle’s efforts.
- 3rd - Star Terms: Travelled along the rail up with the leaders, stayed on to finish third in the final strides.
- 4rth - Lagrandecatherine: Trailed at the rear end of the pack on the inside, weaved it’s way through to fourth place in the final furlongs.
- 5th - Pink Dodgwood: Front runner, flattened out two furlongs out.
- 6th – Rocques: Broke keenly, tried to match the pace of the leaders, no extra.
- 7th - Dubai Beauty: Made his move and looked like a threat but weakened.
- 8th - Ceratonia: Travelled at the rear end, pulled a bit at the start before settling. Failed to quicken.

Achetée samedi soir lors de la vente de l’Arc Arqana pour 490 000 €, Lily’s Candle (Style Vendôme) a rapidement récompensé son nouveau propriétaire, l’Américain Martin Schwartz, en s’adjugeant le Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac - Critérium des Pouliches (Gr1). La pouliche, entraînée par Fabrice Vermeulen à qui elle offre un premier Gr1, a cheminé à l’arrière-garde avant de passer le peloton en revue dans la ligne droite. Elle s’impose d’une courte tête devant Matematica (Rock of Gibraltar), qui n’avait couru qu’à une reprise auparavant. Star Terms (Sea the Stars) est une proche troisième.
Lily’s Candle venait de se classer quatrième du Prix La Rochette (Gr3), face aux mâles, après avoir gagné le Prix des Jouvenceaux et Jouvencelles (L) à Vichy.
Comment elles ont couru
- 1re - Lily’s Candle : Patiente en queue de peloton, et encore loin pour sortir de la fausse ligne droite, a prononcé son effort en pleine piste à 300m du poteau, et au prix d’un superbe coup de reins, est venue arracher la victoire sur le fil.
- 2e - Matematica : Montée sagement, en avant-dernière position, a pris l’avantage à 100m du but, mais n’a pu contenir le rush final de Lily’s Candle.
- 3e - Star Terms : Après avoir galopé à la corde, non loin de la tête, s’est montrée très dure pour venir prendre la troisième place dans les dernières foulées.
- 4e - Lagrandecatherine : A cheminé en queue de peloton, à la corde, et est parvenue à se faufiler dans la ligne droite pour arracher la quatrième place tout à la fin.
- 5e - Pink Dodgwood : Animatrice, a commencé à plafonner à 400m du but.
- 6e - Rocques : Un peu brillante en début de parcours, a tenté de venir à la distance, sans être très heureuse, mais n’a pu faire illusion.
- 7e - Dubai Beauty : A attaqué de bonne heure et a fait un instant illusion, avant de craquer.
- 8e - Ceratonia : A galopé à l’arrière-garde, en tirant un peu au début, avant de se poser. N’a jamais pu accélérer utilement.

« J'ai vécu la course sereinement. Nous l'avons montée pour prendre une place. Nous voulions être placé de Gr1... Mais elle s'est imposée. Elle a eu un bon parcours et elle a bien terminé. Cette première victoire de Gr1 est superbe. Cela récompense le travail de toute l'équipe. Pour la suite, il faudra voir avec son propriétaire. »

« J'estime beaucoup la pouliche, et c'est pour cela que je n'ai pas hésité à la courir dans ce Gr1. Ses propriétaires ont toujours été d'accord avec cette décision et c’est pour moi une chance de travailler avec eux. Aujourd'hui, j'ai cru que c'était fait, mais nous sommes tombés sur un os. Le manque de métier est important à ce niveau-là et Matematica n'est pas aussi endurcie que les autres. Elle l'a payé à la fin. »
