Among the ten runners of the 2020 Shadwell Prix Daphnis (Gr3), a 3-year-olds’ race on the Marois course, that is to say, the straight mile of Deauville, there are two profiles: the ones who are on their way up, and those who simply try to get some black type after failing at the best level. The past of the race does not tell us much since until 2018, it was restricted to 3-year-old colts and geldings and contested over 9 furlongs in June at Maisons-Laffitte. Since its reorganization, it has gathered five, then seven, and now ten runners, which seems to indicate that this race responds to real demand and that it is an international demand since this time, five French-trained colts -including the first four home in the Prix de Tourgeville (L)-, face five foreign raiders including two coming back from a long lay-off. No filly, on the other hand, is at the start, seven days after the Prix de Lieurey (Gr3), which is restricted to them ...

Fourth in the Poule d'Essai (Gr1) for his second outing this season, he was placed fifth at Ascot in the Jersey Stakes (Gr3), and finally fourth behind Well of Wisdom, Kenway and Charlesquint, very close but without any real excuse, most recently in the Prix de Tourgeville (L), over this distance but with a turn.

  • 6. WELL OF WISDOM (c3, GB by Oasis Dream and Alessandria, by Sunday Silence) Rating: 107lbs

Trained in England by Charlie Appleby, bred by his owner, he won his first good race at 2 in the Prix Roland de Chambure (L) over 7f at ParisLongchamp. Second, four lengths behind Earthlight after that, then two lengths behind Alson in the Zukunfts-Rennen (Gr3), at Baden-Baden on September 2, he wintered at Meydan. He fought well there for his comeback and won shortly thereafter. He won again by a short margin in a handicap at Sandown over 7f and was Pinatubo’s pacemaker in the Qatar Prix Jean Prat (Gr1). He immediately took his revenge by winning the hard way, but still handsomely, in the Prix de Tourgeville (L), beating Kenway, Charlesquint and Célestin.

He is entered in the Prix Daniel Wildenstein (Gr2).

  • 7. CHARLESQUINT (c3, IRE by Showcasing and Commute, by Rail Link) Rating: 101lbs

Winner of the Prix des Jouvenceaux and Jouvencelles (L) at Vichy, then the Prix La Rochette (Gr3) at ParisLongchamp, he failed in the Lagardère and then for his return in the Prix Omnium II (L). In the Prix de Fontainebleau (Gr3), on the other hand, he finished well in fourth place, not far from the favourite Victor Ludorum, and ran better than his position at the finish suggests when fifth to the same rival in the Emirates Poule Essai des Poulains (Gr1). Second in the Prix Paul de Moussac Longines (Gr1) ahead of Charlesquint, sixth in the Qatar Prix Jean Prat (Gr1) and second, not very luckily, again in the Prix de Tourgeville (L), behind Well of Wisdom, and ahead of Charlesquint and Célestin, he continues on his momentum.

  • 9. THORIN (c3, GER by Soldier Hollow and Taita, by Big Shuffle) Rating: 106lbs

Trained in Germany by Henk Grewe, bred by his owner, he easily won his first three races this year and then took third place in a Group 3 behind two older horses. He is certainly capable of making further progress.
