MONMIRAL (C3), FRA by Saint des Saints ex Achère (Mont Basile)

Prix Rush (3yo Colts & Geldings unraced over jumps, 1m7f Hurdle Race), March 14, Auteuil

Owner: SARL Carion

Trainer: François Nicolle

Breeder: SARL Carion

Rider: Johnny Charron

Always well placed in a race which was almost a second per kilometre slower than the Auricula Hurdle for fillies run on the same card (see below, Km rate of 1'18''8 against 1'17''9 in the fillies' race), Monmiral (Saint des Saints) nonetheless made a very good impression. The Carion family-bred brown held Hell Red (Martaline) at two and a half lengths, in the end, the latter also showing great resolve as he stayed on after going all the way outside the leading group. The third-placed Shawinigan (Kapgarde) was also always in the hunt, as was the fourth-placed favourite Hirta (Voiladenuo).

Initially entered in the Prix d'Essai des Poulains at Compiègne, Monmiral had never run before. He was one of the few entire colts in the race. His dam Achère (Mont Basile) won for her debut on this same course but later, in May at 4. Monmiral is her seventh foal and her third winner.

She also gave Soulongy (Turgeon), born in 2006 and several times a winner at Auteuil. His latest foal to date is a daughter of No Risk At All named Chambolle, who is now a yearling.

SAINTE CANDY (F3), FRA by Jeu Saint Éloi ex Rose Candy (Roli Abi)

Prix Auricula (3yo Fillies unraced over jumps, 1m7f Hurdle race), March 14, Auteuil

Owners: Jacques & Patrice Détré

Trainer: François Nicolle

Breeders: Jean Contou-Carrère & Yves Broca

Rider: Angelo Zuliani

Anita du Berlais (Martaline) led the field followed by Saura (Spirit One), Sainte Candy (Jeu Saint-Éloi) happily sitting in their wake until the backstretch. She made her move then on the outside, along with Montligeon (Diamond Boy). Anita looked like she could handle them for a while but after the last jump, which Sainte Candy made very quickly, she couldn't resist her anymore. Yet the front runner never quite gave up and she was only beaten by three and a half lengths without losing momentum, two lengths ahead of Montligeon.

Sainte Candy is a sister to Pic d'Orhy (Turgeon), winner of the male version of this race, the Rush 3yo Hurdle, two years ago, then second in the Cambacérès 3yo Hurdle (Gr1) behind Beaumec de Houelle. He was exported to Great Britain after that and has just won his first Group race at Newbury. They are also the brothers and sisters of Éclair Gris (Fairly Ransom), who won over hurdles at Auteuil at the start of their career before skimming provincial claimers. Another brother by Doctor Dino was born in 2019.

Their dam Rose Candy (Roli Abi), bred by Patrick Boiteau, did not run. She is, however, a sister to Minirose (Mansonnien), who foaled Irish Saint (Saint of Saints), a winner of Group2 Chases in Britain.

One finds further down the classic French chaser Bonbon Rose (Mansonnien) and Clarcam (Califet), winner of Group1 chases in the UK.

MARY’S FRANCE (F3), FRA by Acclamation ex Mary’s Precedent (Storming Home)

€25,000 Prix du Soissonnais (Unraced 3yo Fillies, 1,600m/1m AWT), March 13, Chantilly

Owners: Nicolas Saltiel, Carlos & Yann Lerner (Prizemoney + Owner Premiums = € 19,250)

Trainers: Carlos & Yann Lerner

Breeders: Écurie Haras du Cadran & SCEA Bissons (Breeder Premiums 8.5% as not sired in France = € 1,636)

Rider: Eddy Hardouin

Long-held in the middle of the pack, Mary’s France (Acclamation) was able to get out about two furlongs out and she came in the last stride to pip Jalmiya (Kingman), ridden more aggressively. Note the fast finish of Conte de Fée (Sea the Stars)  to take fourth place.

The winning filly was bought at Deauville sales by Carlos and Yann Lerner for € 65,000. She was consigned there by the Haras du Cadran. Her older sister by Mastercraftsman, who left training without a run, was sold for € 3,000 in summer sales last year.

Their dam Mary’s Precedent (Storming Home), a Listed winner in France, has as second dam Allwaki, who is also the 2nd dam of Sistercharlie, My Sister Nat and the French Derby winner Sottsass

An Intello 2yo filly came next.

SI SENORITA (F3), FRA by Dabirsim ex Snow Valley (Choisir)

€30,000 Prix Talweg (Maiden 3yo Fillies, 1,900m/9.5f AWT), March 13, Chantilly

Owner: Gérard Augustin-Normand (Prizemoney + Owner Premiums = € 23,100)

Trainer: Pia Brandt

Breeder: Erich Schmid (Breeder Premiums 13% as sired in France = € 3,003)

Rider: Maxime Guyon

Second in a maiden race in February on this course for her debut, Si Senorita (Dabirsim) was checked early on and kept in the rearguard this time, following New World Next (Fastnet Rock) behind a field led by River Rock (Fastnet Rock). Going off the bend, the latter made her move and tried to keep ahead but shifted towards the middle of the track, New World Next and Si Senorita rushed and the Gérard Augustin-Normand-owned filly finally dominated handsomely. She beats New World Next by ¾ of a length, with River Rock third a short neck behind.

Si Senorita was bought € 85,000 at the Arqana August sales by Jean-Claude Rouget. Her full sister was unsold at € 22,000 last August at the same sales. Both were consigned by the Haras du Petit Tellier. Their dam Snow Valley (Pick) won two races for breeder Erich Schmid. She has already given four winners of a combined 19 races, and more recently a The Grey Gatsby colt born in 2019.

RAJANI (G3), FRA by Siyouni ex Ramora (Monsun)

€25,000 Prix du Beauvaisis (Unraced 3yo Colts & Geldings, 1,600m/1m AWT), March 13, Chantilly

Owner: Mrs André Fabre (Prizemoney + Owner Premiums + Breeders Premiums = € 21,752)

Trainer: André Fabre

Breeder: Écurie Peregrine (Breeder Premiums 13% as sired in France = € 2,502)

Rider: Pierre-Charles Boudot

After losing his place at the start, Rajani (Siyouni), gelded in November and geared with blinders first time out, was able to sit in the field and delay his move to the final straight. He then dominated his closest rivals but a little further, the promising beginners Raysteve (Charm Spirit), third at less than half a length, and Further Measure (English Channel), fifth coming from very far, are worthy of note.

Rajani is out of Ramora (Monsun), an American winner in England who only gave one winner before that, Rajkumar (Lope de Vega), a handicap winner for trainer André Fabre, rated 93lbs today. The mare had been claimed after her only appearance in France, at Deauville, where Mrs Fabre bought her for € 17,789.

MOSHADID (C3), IRE by Dubawi ex Saraaba (New Approach)

€30,000 Prix Tandem (Maiden 3yo Colts & Geldings, 1,900m/9.5f AWT), March 13, Chantilly

Owner: Hamdam Al Maktoum (Prizemoney, no premiums = €15,000)

Trainer: Freddy Head

Breeder: Shadwell Estate (No premiums: Irishbred, not assimilated)

Rider: Aurélien Lemaître

Twice well beaten at 2, Moshadid (Dubawi) did well for his return in a hot Chantilly maiden on all-weather, finishing a staying on fifth after leading most of the race. Geared with blinkers for the first time here, he followed the free front-running Huracan (Elusive City), then took over going into the straight and was able to stay out of reach of The Shard ((Pivotal)  who was finally beaten by a mere length.

This course of action resembles that taken by his dam Saraaba (New Approach), who was also trained by Freddy Head for the same connections. She'd won twice in the first half of her 3-year-old season but didn't confirm afterwards, however. Moshadid seems to be her only foal to date.

Saraaba is a sister to Motamarris (Le Havre), third in the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr1) behind Sottsass last year. Her dam Thamaraat (Anabaa) won at 2 is a sister to Tamayuz (Nayef), a dual Gr1 winner for Sheikh Hamdan and Freddy Head. Moshadid is from the family of the legendary Arc-winner and dam of sires Urban Sea since her dam Allegretta is also his fifth dam …

IRSKA (F3), FRA by Hunter’s Light ex Eire (Medicean)

€25,000 Prix de la Serpentine (Unraced 3yo fillies, 1,900m/9.5f AWT), March 3, Chantilly

Owner: Lutz Bongen (Prizemoney + Owner Premiums = € 19,250)

Trainer: Markus Nigge

Breeders: Mr. & Mrs Markus Nigge (Breeder Premiums, 13% + 50% as sired by young French-based sire and foaled by the dam of at least one black-type performer= € 3,753)

Rider: Hugo Journiac

Like Another Sky but with a little less margin, Irska (Hunter’s Light) won from start to finish for these debuts. Leased by Lutz Bongen to her breeder and trainer Markus Nigge, she crossed the post in 2'00''19, about a second more than the winner of the other beginners' race of the day on the all-weather, but she completed the last five furlongs almost as fast as the colt (61''00 against 60''92).

She first repelled a looming Space Race (Sea the Stars), who couldn't keep up the winner's pace one out, then kept more than a length to spare over a fast-finishing Maccaja (Havana Gold).

Irska is out of the good Eire (Medicean), a winner of five races and dam of the Listed-placed Happy Approach (New Approach). Eiria (King’s Best), her first foal and the winner of five races, was sold barren for € 12,000 last February at Arqana to Sylvain Vidal. Eire also gave the 4-year-old Toijk (Siyouni), a consistent handicap performer for the same connections, and a Le Havre yearling.

ANOTHER SKY (C3), FRA by Le Havre ex Darkova (Maria’s Mon)

€25,000 Prix de la Traversière (Unraced 3yo colts & geldings, 1,900m/9.5f AWT), March 3, Chantilly

Owner: George Strawbridge (Prizemoney + Owner Premiums + Breeder Premiums = € 21,752)

Trainer: Freddy Head

Breeder: George Strawbridge (Owner Premiums, 13% as sired in France  = € 2,502)

Rider: Aurélien Lemaitre

Bred in Calvados by his American owner George Strawbridge, Another Sky (Le Havre) cantered home, winning all the way by 4 1/2 lengths, his rider holding in the last 100 yards. This big and good looking brother of the French Derby winner Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) is also out of the unraced dam Darkova (Maria’s Mon).

Bred at haras d’Etreham, like his elders, he's, however, bred namely by George Strawbridge, like his 2-year-old brother by Wootton Bassett and his yearling sister by Frankel.

It traces back from an Aga Khan family where Darjina, and the French Derby winner Darsi also feature.

Main entries: Prix du Jockey Club (Gr1), Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris (Gr1).
